We are a team


Most of the time, an ece usually works with other teachers or even support workers in the same classroom since the capacity of one classroom could be 16 or 24 group kids of aged 3 to 5. In this setting, teamwork is essential to ensure children’s safety, maintain the program flow smoothly and stick to the daily routine. Clear communication is surely the key to success.  Here are some of the moments that really feel like “ we are a team!”


Snack/lunch time

In Particular, I like to empathize with healthy nutrition. So, In the mornings, I usually have the kids choose yogurt, fruit or cheese, to keep their energy level up but not spike their sugar level. Also, the yogurt is perishable and the fruit won’t be as fresh as they are although all of the kids require to have ice packs in their lunch bag. I always explain the reasons behind these choices  to the teachers and kidsI work with. This clear communication keeps us on the same page and prevents the children from testing the boundaries with different teachers. 


Collaborative work on the bulletin board

At the center, we change our bulletin board by seasons, adding some elements for special holidays. For instance, we have an autumn theme as a base, then add  Halloween decoration. Recently, I knew the other two teachers needed some support for the board. so , I asked them to brainstorm some ideas for the summer/oceans theme.. One of them showed me the idea of “ under the sea.” I sketched out some jellyfish, octopus, fish, sharks and starfish for them to paint. When I saw them discussing the colors and joyfully painting the picture, I felt so blessed and proud that we supported each other, shared our strength and accomplished  the task through true teamwork.

Reflection on our  professional recognition and value  Recently, lots of short clips and videos about teaching have been popping up on my IG. I have noticed that many of them are talking about teaching strategies, the techniques of handling behavioral issues or management. Most of them provide great tips for the teachers to practice in the field. However, I haven’t seen much about  how we can support ourselves to cope with the stress and demands so we do not get burned out? First, I think we need to  face the reality that being a teacher, especially working with young children can be undervalued, comparing the hours and stress we have to take to what we receive.Many people might just show their appreciation by just “saying” it instead of genuine recognition.I remember once I had an interview to renew my visa and the officer asked about my occupation. Engaging our little friends in the circle time I always value “circle time” for several reasons. First of all, I like to do various activities with the young children, not only just reading books or stories but also science, math and movements, touching the core to enrich their experiences. Secondly, the little ones develop more of their social and intellectual skills in a small group setting. For example, I ask them to probably sit and keep their hands on the labs because we respect personal space and ensure their safety so while I am calling a friend to come to the center to do activities, their hands won’t be stepped on accidentally. Most importantly, this structure prompts young children cognitive development by listening to the new concept and sharing their thoughts.
